![]() This analog powerhouse is packed into a four-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, making it perfect for stage or studio. Manufactured and sold by Dave Smith Instruments, the OB-6 features six discrete analog voices with two oscillators (plus sub oscillator) per voice, continuously variable waveshapes with triangle, sawtooth, and variable-width pulse waves, X-mod with 2 sources and 5 destination, a 64-step polyphonic step sequencer, dual digital effects that include faithful recreations of Tom’s acclaimed phase shifter and ring modulator, a full-featured arpeggiator, and a powerful, in-your-face, sonic signature like no other instrument. It’s an all-analog, 6-voice poly synth with voltage-controlled oscillators, a state-variable filter, and voltage-controlled amplifiers, inspired by Tom’s original SEM design - the bedrock of his legendary 4-voice and 8-voice synthesizers. Its still interesting to me that the OB fetches as much as $500 more on the used market, despite them being virtually the same synths.įWIW: I sold them both and I currently own a REV2 and an Oberheim Two Voice Pro.The OB-6 is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the most influential synth designers in history - Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim. ![]() Dave Smith himself told me that wide open, they are the same exact thing, so if the filter doesn't move you, consider this. The FX, modulations, and Oscillators sounded equal to me. I tended to thing of the Prophet-6 as "brassier with lots of top end" while the OB was "dirtier while smoother for pads" although you can get reasonably close sounds with each. If you love the Oberheim OBX and SEM filter and its resonance character 圆, then the OB is for you. ![]() In this regard, it is slightly more flexible. As others have mentioned, if you prefer the sound of the Sequential Prophet 5 filter and want an awesome hipass/lopass combo, then the Prophet-6 is your synth. Having owned and used both, I feel like I can chime in for one-mans-opinion: it comes down to the filter(s) in each.
